A former Belgian colony established in 1908, the Republic Democratic of the Congo gained its independence in 1960 from
colonial rule. 30th June 2010 marks 50 years of independence.
Q. Why celebrate Congo’s Golden jubilee?
A. A golden jubilee is a celebration held to mark 50th anniversary for events of significant importance. It goes back to biblical times and has
been used by families, leaders and countries a like in order to reflect, restore, remit debts and reconcile old feuds.
Despite the continue tussle we face daily as a nation, its’ worth reflecting on does who fought endlessly in the struggle for independence. We have
reached yet another significant moment as a country, this an opportunity to awaken that spirit of intent and “Progressive Thinking” like our brothers
and sisters had done fifty years ago. This is also a good medium in order to position and project to the world what is positive about our country.
Q. What is the theme of anniversary?
A. Progressive Thinking
Q. What will be the high-light of the celebration?
A. The play will capture a lot of people’s imagination, as deals with all of the important aspect of our lives from decade to decade, emphasises
placed on music, fashion and popular culture. There is a lot of nostalgia moment which even the younger generation will find amusing.
Q. With all that has gone wrong in DR Congo, what is there to celebrate?
A. Of course, many things have gone wrong, and the process to progression as been painfully slow, but must always remember the intention of those
fought for independence. We can now call ourselves by our nation’s name (Congo), a nation free from colonial governance and oppression. Been
given the opportunity by our ancestors to pave our own path is the greatest sacrifice on their part, and yet the greatest achievement as nation.
Q. Would the celebration involve young people, what contribution can they add to the celebration?
A. Where would a nation be without fresh minds, popular culture and a great sense of adventure. Our community always thrive on youthfulness.
Fresh ideas, modern ideologies, technology and innovation are all opponents of the “Progressive Thinking” mechanism. We must take proud on young
people’s integration onto a new land and what they have retrieved from it, and find a balanced plateau to incorporate the old and the new.
